This graphic aims to make it easier to see the most popular artists of the 80’s and how their production varies from year to year. The project used Flourish to visualize this large amount of data in a simple way. The result is an animated bar graph that shows the art pieces the galleries own that were made between 1980 and 1989 and organizes them by artist and year.

Sources

The data is from github. It is a portion of the metadata for the 70,000 pieces of artwork Tate owns. I was specifically interested in the information about the artists and the year the artwork was created. Here is the link to the original data table.

Processes

When I was looking at the data the most interesting detail seemed to be the giant gap between the number of pieces the most common artists had in the collection and how many artists had just one piece in the collection. I began by downloading the data into Excel and making a pivot table that counted the number of pieces of art each artist made. I tried out a couple of other filters like year the art was added to the collection and medium but the most interesting results where the year the pieces were created. I then downloaded this new chart into Flourish where I started by making a series of normal bar graphs. There were too many graphs and it was unclear what I was trying to show. So then I took the information and put it into an animated bar graph that showed all of the individual graphs in one visualization.

Presentation

This visualization is made public on my domain along with the process of creating it. This allows people to view the graphic and have the context to be able to fully appreciate it. I picked my theme because it is friendly and inviting. It invites all people to view the data contained on the site.

Significance

This graph shows a more visually appealing way to view the data that allows a wider audience to be able to understand it. It is easy to see that the major artists of this collection vary greatly from year to year. Viewers can conclude that no one artist dominates the collection. One place that this graphic falls short is demonstrating just how many artists contributed to this collection as you can only see the top 10 artists at any one time.

Introduction Tate is a series of four galleries that hold over 70,000 art pieces.
